Branding and Treats

G just recently said in passing how much I spend on novelty food items, which I defensively countered with how I make all my own meals and coffee and I don't treat myself to anything else (like, I actually need unripped pants but am too cheap to buy those - whatever! Summer is coming! The rips are air vents!) but I do admit I have an intense desire to know what all the cute little vegan snacks out there are and I probably do spend too much money on them. It's probably that I don't want to be left out of the cool vegan club. All that said, here are some treats I bought and ate recently.

Nutiva o'coconut bite: This was really great! It was only lightly sweet but was nice and chewy like a macaroon. Not sure what the deal will be with them though; it doesn't look like they're on the Nutiva website and I haven't seen them at Whole Foods since. A test product, maybe?

Brad's Raw Nasty Hot kale chips, an old favorite

Sorta similar, but raw cabbage this time. Alive & Radiant Veggie Crunch Arugula/Cabbage. I liked these a lot too. It is a mellower flavor than Brad's but more substantial to bite into. And if I were to ever make my own, raw cabbage chips sound slightly easier than kale chips, if only because there are fewer curly nooks and crannies to thoroughly dry off. I got a gift of some dough from a regular customer I deal with, which is why I splurged on the last two items. Also I am trying to find snacks that don't feed into my sweet tooth.

I love this Evolution Sweet Greens and Lemon juice. Not too sweet, not too pricey.
More on where the hell else all my money is going next time...

  1. The more Cabbage Crunch you buy, the greater the odds of you being kicked out of the Cool Vegan Club.

    1. Are you president of the Cool Vegan Club??

    2. No, but one doesn't have to be president of a club to request a motion to kick out the Cabbage Crunchers.

  2. I'm really picky about how I spend my money too. I have needed a hair cut for the past 6 months but I don't go in... and instead I splurge on skin care, ha! I'll splurge on random food items too... like mulberries. So expensive but so good!

The coconut bite sounds delicious!! I hope they do stock them in Whole Foods because I'd love to try that. The cabbage chips sound so interesting! I've heard of people making brussels sprout chips and that sounds tasty too. The juice sounds great too!

    1. Ooooh mulberries. I NEVER see those! Golden ones? or purple? Dried or fresh? The neighbor across the street when I was growing up had a mulberry tree, I used to love picking those berries!
I'll have to keep an eye out for the bites. Hopefully the Nutiva people see this and recognize that their audience needs them!

    2. I have only seen dried golden mulberries! They sell them in Whole Foods but they are very expensive sadly. Nutivas Naturals actually sells mulberries! I've never bought theirs because I've seen less expensive bags but they are such a yummy treat!

  3. At least the snacks you buy are healthy! I was just going to tell you that I've recently learned (from the proprietor of Mister Sister) that the new Handsome Dan's snocone & candy stand in the EV has a vegan section!!!

    1. Don't tell me that!! I may have to stop by...

  4. I go in phases about buying stuff like this. It depends on how obvious I want to be about snacks when I work from coffee shops. Like, I could pack a big, noisy tupperwear of carrots and hummus or do I buy whatever new vegan bar I haven't tried? It's especially difficult because the coffee shop I frequent is right by a Whole Foods. Eep! Those nutiva bites look yummy. I hope they come back on the reg!

    1. Good point about the obviousness of snacks...sometimes I feel like a weirdo hauling out a bag of homemade crackers or something, when everyone else at work is hitting up the vending machine. I am also very particular about my hands not touching the food, so it's easier when something is in a package.
I know, my job is a couple blocks down from WF - too tempting.

  5. I have the same problem! I spend way more than I should on groceries and snacks (like I buy more stuff every shopping trip when I have enough in my pantry/freezer to eat off of for months). But it just kills me to buy clothes or shoes that I need. Like my Converse have serious holes in them (not the cool worn-in holes, but my toes sticks out holes). But I'd rather spend the $50 I'd use to buy more on more food.

  6. Oh heavens, so much of my discretionary spending is fancy/novelty food. like, all of it, because 98% of the time I hate clothes shopping, I don't do drugs... really, in the scheme of things, we have the least worrying or financially-problematic splurging urges ;) High five!

    1. I hate clothes shopping too! I wonder what it is, that I can happily browse aisle after aisle of food, but clothes... ! no way.
You're probably right though. It's good we don't have an expensive drug habit. For more reasons than one.

    2. Phew, that was me sneakily trying to scope out whether you'd put crack in my coffee when we meet up one day xo

  7. I cannot simply wait for Summer…and be able to eat all the sweets wherever I go, haha. I understand how it feels to have an intense desire to know what all the cute little vegan snacks out there are and sometimes I do spend a lot of money on them. One of them is Earth Balance cheddar crackers and I can’t find them, poof. Nice little vegan snacks…I haven’t ried them yet, funny I was at a grocery last night and saw Brad’s “Raw Nasty Hot” kale chips and was tempted to get them, but bought produce instead to make my green juices. Evolution Sweet Greens & Lemon’s pretty good, I used to drink them on a quick cleanse, plus they are pretty affordable at Safeway - got them for sale (2 for $5 or $6, I can’t remember).

    1. I wish I saw those juices on sale like that!
Good for you on holding off on the kale chips in favor of produce. I am not as strong.
I haven't had the EB crackers, but the pop corn is good!

  8. I am totally into the Evolution Fresh juices! I know juice is juice is juice, but I love the taste and the availability.

    1. True, they are easy to get. And I love that they aren't so heavy on the fruit like most green juices are.

  9. Well, until it's G's $$ I'm afraid his opinion here doesn't count.....;)! Better to spend money on delicious vegan snacks than random taxis or collecting trinkets.
That nutvia bite thingy sounds amazing, kinda like a hail merry macaroon? That sweet green evolution juice is good! I pick up a few when they go on sale at my fairway.

    1. Thank you! He spends all his money on video games, so there. Yes! Very much like a HM macaroon, but unflavored, I guess. Mostly coconutty.
